When I was a child, mum would read to me every night. After a bedtime prayer, I would be tucked up in bed while mum sat on the edge of the bed. She would open a book, draw her breath and begin to read. I never had any idea whom I'd meet on those magical nights. There was Alice going through the looking glass; Robinson Crusoe on his island; Oliver Twist starving in the workhouse or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the lab. As the years passed, I grew up, went to universiy, and found work as a newspaper reporter. Mum grew old and frail. Now she is an invalid, confined to bed. Her body may be weak but her mind is as bright as ever. I read to her now, from some of the well-worn and dog eared books she read to me so long ago. Sometimes I think back to my childhood nights when mum would be weary after a long day's work but was never too tired to open a book and read to me. Text Box: Malaysia Boleh spirit as its best
By Tan Karr Wei
The fans, largely Manchester United (MU) supporters, gathered as early as 1 p.m. at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday to watch the Red Devils take on the Malaysian national team.
Apart from ensuring a good seat at the stadium, the early birds also took the opportunity to check on the MU merchandise, especially the English Premier League champions’ new kit season, at the many stalls outside the stadium.
The fans’ favourite was the new home jersey by Nike, which has two black stripes running across the chest of the red shirt, designed specially to pay tribute to the 1909 Manchester United FA Cup winning team.
Mostly, clad in United’s red, the fans were in high spirits, doing the Mexican wave and chanting the names of their favourite players as the visitors strolled out for their warm-up at about 4.45p.m.
Apart from newly-signed Michael Owen, other star players who had the fans’ roar of approval were Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes.
Some fans miss the kick-off at 5.30 p.m. as traffic leading to the stadium was heavy and chaotic. The move to close the entrance to some of the parking bays around the stadium only made the situation worse.
Though many had gathered from near and far to watch the Red Devils, it was the sterling performance of the Malaysian team that became the talking point of the match.
